With the revelation that my son Alex was finally old enough to start spending some time on the trails I quickly researched kid carriers and got my act together. After just a few hikes I realized I wanted to chronicle these early hikes. I also realized many new parents might be looking for solid advice on hiking with infant/toddlers, and while I am quite new to being a parent, I’ve been in the outdoor recreation industry providing advice in one capacity or another since I was 15.
From gear junkie, to sales rep, to ice climbing instructor, I have quite a few days in the mountains around the world, and felt that perhaps a blog could be more than just a personal journal of our hikes together. The idea for this blog was born half-way around Falls Pond about a week ago. It’s intended to be part journal, part guide, part resource. With a mix of trip reports, gear reviews, (iPhone Ap reviews) and helpful links, as well as encouraging other new parents to chip in on all topics in the discussions, I hope it can help motivate some people to get their kids into the woods, in a responsible and “stacked for success” kind of way.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention I’ve also gained inspiration from CragMama, an blog maintained by a rock climbing mother from Charlotte, SC. Her posts on climbing with her toddler have certainly helped me realize that parenthood need not end my climbing days. Check out her blog if getting kids into nature is up your alley!
