Mount Washington Observatory: This is a must check site before leaving the driveway! It amazes me that despite having a weather observatory cranking out excellent mountain weather forecasts every morning soon after 5am many hikers I’ve met have no idea what the forecast for the day is. I have it bookmarked on my computer and my iPhone. Be sure to check the Higher Summits forecast if heading above tree-line, as it is certainly different than the valley forecast.

It is shocking and something I make a point to emphasize to all of the beginner hikers I lead on trips or teach. The biggest threat to your personal safety in the White Mountains (or anywhere else) is the weather. I track the weather for days in advance of a hike in the Whites and always call off above treeline hikes if thunderstorms are forecast.
